Marketing Site Rebuild
At Lion Interactive, I was the primary front-end developer for Flipboard's marketing site, About Flipboard. We rebuilt their entire web presence on WordPress, focusing on flexibility and giving their team editorial control.
The Challenge
Flipboard needed a marketing site their team could easily update without calling a developer every time. Their old site was rigid and hard to maintain, plus they had thousands of blog posts that needed migrating from their previous platform. They also wanted modern animations and a responsive design that worked across all devices.
My Role
Working under my lead developer, I coordinated a small team to build a modular, component-based WordPress theme. The system let Flipboard's marketing staff construct custom page layouts by mixing and matching pre-built modules—gave them full creative control while keeping everything visually consistent.
A big part of my work was migrating their blog content. I built a custom import process that transferred thousands of posts from their old platform, including automated image migration and content sanitization to make sure everything displayed correctly. I also implemented custom URL rewrite rules to create a hierarchical blog/subblog structure that organized their content better.
On the technical side, I built React-based interactive components that integrated with WordPress, designed CSS transitions and animations throughout the site, and created Lottie-based animations using AfterEffects for the homepage hero. I also integrated ReCAPTCHA for form security and made sure everything was fully responsive across desktop, tablet, and mobile.
Throughout the project, I worked closely with Flipboard's team to understand their workflow and design preferences. Regular check-ins made sure the technical side aligned with their marketing goals and that the CMS was intuitive for their staff.
The Result
The site launched successfully and gave Flipboard's marketing team the flexibility they needed to manage their content independently. The modular theme system we built actually became a template for future projects at Lion Interactive.
